Zucchini

Description

Zucchini (Latin Cucurbita pepo var. giromontina) is an annual herbaceous plant of the pumpkin family, which was introduced to Europe from America in the 16th century. The Iroquois Indians have traditionally eaten zucchini for 10 millennia and considered them their main food along with pumpkin, beans and corn. They were planted together so that the beans could crawl on the corn stalks, and zucchini grew in the shade. The leaves of the zucchini prevented the weeds from growing, and the beans provided the neighbors with nitrogen. The fruits of the squash have an oblong shape of green, yellow or white.
